Dr. Sharon Ritchie-Brown

Of all my achievements, I am most proud of being a professor. Teaching is more than imparting knowledge. It is a reciprocal process in which both students and professors learn. No one possesses complete wisdom, and true education requires humility, the willingness to share and to receive knowledge. A professor must come prepared, not only to teach, but also to listen and grow through engagement with students.

During my doctoral studies, an Epistemology course titled The Nature of Knowing shaped my philosophy of teaching. I came to understand that professors are not only purveyors of knowledge but also consumers of it. This dual role demands reflection on what we know, how we teach it, and how we remain open to continual discovery.

In the classroom, I cultivate an environment that is respectful, consultative, and facilitative. It values curiosity, dialogue, and diverse perspectives. Professors must also serve as models, demonstrating empathy and resilience as students navigate the challenges of learning. What we model today shapes the academic journey of our students and the values and practices they will carry into their lives and professions.
